Buying guide

How to choose belfast & ceramic sinks.

What is a Belfast sink?

A deep, front-facing sink that sits on top of a dedicated base unit rather than in the worktop, traditionally in white fireclay. Butler sinks are similar but shallower.

Fireclay, quartz or steel?

Fireclay is glazed and fired at high temperature, so it is very hard and resists stains. The Maya Belfast is quartz composite. The Zen15 Belfast gives the same apron-front look in stainless steel for a modern kitchen.

The cabinet

A Belfast sink needs a Belfast sink base unit, which has a lower front and a cut-out for the sink to sit in. We plan the right unit in your free kitchen design.

Taps for a Belfast sink

Belfast sinks have no tap hole, so the tap goes in the worktop behind the sink or on the wall. Bridge mixers and wall-mounted taps such as Henry Holt, Moulins and Antica suit them well.

Common questions

Belfast sinks: common questions.

Does a Belfast sink need a special cabinet?

Yes. It sits on a Belfast sink base unit with a lower front and a frame to support the weight. Most 595–600mm Belfast sinks fit a 600mm unit.

What is the difference between a Belfast and a butler sink?

Both are front-facing ceramic sinks. A Belfast sink is deeper and traditionally had an overflow; a butler sink is shallower.

What tap goes with a Belfast sink?

A tap mounted on the worktop behind the sink, or on the wall. Taps with a tall or long spout reach the centre of the deep bowl best.

Are fireclay sinks hard-wearing?

Yes. The glaze is non-porous and resists stains and heat. A heavy pan dropped on the edge can chip it, so take care with cast iron.

How much is delivery?

Sinks and taps are delivered for £10 + VAT anywhere on the UK mainland. In-stock 1810 Company products are dispatched the next working day when you order by 12 noon; in-stock Second Nature sinks and taps arrive in 2–5 working days.
