Handle types

Cup handles and knobs suit Shaker and traditional kitchens. Bar handles, T-bar handles and D-handles work on almost any door and are easy to grip. Slim edge pulls and profile handles keep a modern kitchen clean-lined, and handleless rails remove handles altogether.

Getting the size right

Handles are sized by the distance between their two fixing holes, known as the hole centres. If you are replacing handles on existing doors, measure the hole centres first and choose the same size, so the old holes stay hidden. The most common sizes are 128mm and 160mm hole centres, and knobs, with or without a backplate, need just one hole. On larger doors and wide pan drawers, a longer handle looks better and is easier to pull.

Finishes

Brushed steel and chrome are practical and easy to match. Matt black suits both modern and painted kitchens, while brass, bronze and pewter finishes add warmth to Shaker and in-frame designs. Order one handle first if you want to see a finish in your kitchen.
