How to measure your kitchen for a free design

Ten minutes with a tape measure, a pencil and your phone is all a designer needs to plan your new kitchen.

A light grey kitchen with a quartz worktop

To design a kitchen we need the length of every wall, the ceiling height, where the windows and doors are, and where the water, waste, gas and electrics come in. Sketch the room from above, add the measurements in millimetres, take a few photos, and send them with our free design form.

What you need

  • A tape measure (a 5m or 8m steel tape is easiest).
  • A pencil and paper, or a free room planner on your phone.
  • Your phone camera.

Step by step

  1. Draw the outline of the room from above, roughly to shape. Mark north if you know it.
  2. Measure each wall from corner to corner at about worktop height (900mm), as walls are rarely perfectly straight. Write every measurement in millimetres.
  3. Measure the ceiling height in two or three places.
  4. For each window, measure from the nearest corner to the edge of the frame, the width of the frame, the height from the floor to the sill, and the sill to the top.
  5. For each door, measure its position from the corner, its width including the frame, and which way it opens.
  6. Mark radiators, the boiler, the meter, any pipes or boxing, and anything you can't move.
  7. Mark where the water pipes and waste come in, the gas supply, and the main sockets and switches.
  8. Note any steps, beams or sloping ceilings.

Photos that help

  • Each wall, straight on, from the opposite side of the room.
  • The corners, the window and the boiler or meter.
  • Where the pipes and waste come through the wall or floor.

Tell us how you'll use it

Tell us which appliances you're keeping or buying (with model numbers if you have them), whether you want an island or a breakfast bar, and your budget. Then pick a door style or two from our ranges if you have a favourite.

What happens next

Send your sketch, measurements and photos with our free design form (you can upload up to five files). A designer sends back a floor plan, 3D images, elevation drawings and an itemised quote, usually within 1 to 2 working days, and changes it as many times as you like.

Send us your measurements. We'll send back your kitchen.
