A Shaker larder cabinet with wine storage

A kitchen is built from three heights of cabinet: base units under the worktop, wall units above it and tall units from floor to near the ceiling. Within those, a handful of special units do the hard work: corners, larders, appliance housings, pan drawers and dressers. Here is what each one is for, with the sizes and the typical prices across the 93 rigid kitchen ranges we sell, including VAT.

Standard sizes

  • Base units: 870mm high including legs and 560mm deep, in widths from 150mm to 1000mm.
  • Wall units: 300mm deep, usually 720mm high (575mm and 900mm are also made).
  • Tall units: 1825mm, 1970mm or 2150mm high before the legs go on, mostly 600mm wide.
  • Mid-height units: 1250mm high, for an oven at eye level beside a worktop.
  • Dresser units: 1210mm high, standing on the worktop under the wall units.

Corner base units

An L-shaped kitchen needs one corner base unit where the two runs meet. The usual one is 1000mm wide with a 600mm door; the rest of the cabinet runs blind into the corner. Most cost £250 to £290. Add a corner pull-out such as a LeMans or a Magic Corner to reach the space at the back.

Corner wall units

The wall-unit version sits above the corner base: typically 600mm on each wall with a single door. Most cost £160 to £195.

Larder units

A tall larder unit holds a week's food in one cupboard. A 600mm wide, 2150mm tall larder with shelves or internal drawers typically costs £380 to £475. A narrow pull-out larder (300mm wide) brings every shelf out to you on runners and typically costs £320 to £380.

Oven and appliance housings

  • Built-under oven housing: a 600mm base unit with a drawer below the oven, typically £130 to £150.
  • Tall oven housing: puts a single or double oven at eye level, typically £335 to £410 for a 2150mm single oven housing.
  • Fridge-freezer housing: a tall unit with doors fixed to an integrated fridge-freezer. Choose the appliance first: the housing must match its height and the split between fridge and freezer doors.

Pan drawer units

Three deep soft-close drawers under the hob hold pans, lids and utensils better than a cupboard does. A 600mm three-drawer unit typically costs £430 to £485 and is worth it in most kitchens.

Dresser units

Dressers stand on the worktop beneath the wall units, often with glass doors, open shelves or a tambour roller door, to make a feature of a run. A 1000mm glazed dresser typically costs £205 to £220.
